Building on the Mall 2 - The Next Step

boxer 1Here we are the first weekend of April and they are demolishing the building from behind (the Water Street side). The noise is audible, the jack hammering and the crashings of wall toppling. It’s fairly constant but because it is behind the front facade of granite, the noise is somewhat muffled and I can still work without too many complaints from my clients. What makes me most nuts is the beep-beep-beeping of the back-hoe or the whatever it is that warns everyone that it is backing up or alerts people that stuff is happening. As if passers-by didn’t know a wall was coming down! No, we have to have incessant beeping to tell dozy wanderers not to go near a big truck bashing a wall down…

This is a fun photo because you can see right through the front windows to the open air behind. That’s the debris of the destruction. And you can also see the second floor being demolished as well. I love the green fence of on 2nd Street showing through the window. It gives perspective on the amount of rubble!

. I am thinking that by Monday, the whole back and side walls will be down, with only the front granite facade showing. They have to keep the frontage ‘for historic reasons’… Whatever…

Compare this photo to the one above! This one is only one week later and yet look at all the progress. You can see through the windows all the way to Water Street and then even part of the AG Edwards building on South Street. And then past to the Gleason building on the other side of the tracks behind and above the Edwards building. I love this open view and am sad to think that soon this will be all built in again.

You can contrast this image to the very top one to see the difference. And if you look closely you can see the buds starting to form on the trees.
