Rebricking the Mall 2009
The City of Charlottesville had been debating all of 2008 as to whether the bricks on the mall should be replaced. Because the issue had been on the table for so long, I never believed it would happen… that is until Januuary 2, 2009, when the first signs of the rebricking began outside my window in the central place. Here is a photo of the fencing that they put up all around the work area – the “hard hat area”. As you can see to the right, the Christmas tree outside my office is still up although they have already taken the lights and ornaments off.

Next was the digging up of the old brick. Talk about noisy!!! Back-hoes, jack hammers, dump trucks, fork lifts – every imaginable man-toy was being used.
And what was even more funny was seeing all these business men in their suits, all standing around watching the trucks work. I thought they were all little kids at the sand box with their toys…

After they dug up the old bricks, they had to smooth out the underneath and a whole mess of other construction stuff. Then they began delivering the sand in preparation of laying the new bricks.
